The first question I am asked about comics these days is, “What’s the difference between a graphic novel and a comic book?” The answer is: The graphic novel is a collection of comic books. In other words, every comic book in the graphic novel is a comic book. You will note in most titles now being released, the publisher has divided the book into several numbered chapters, each with its own story. Most of these chapters have individual issues or chapters within them. The exception is a novel, like this one, or graphic noir. In that case, most of the chapters have a longer length of about 20 or more pages.

While these are comic books, they do not fit into the comic book category as many used to. There are no more than 12 pages in most comics, and one page is a comic panel, so there is a single page of narrative. In a graphic novel, there are usually fewer pages of the text, more pages with panels. If you think about it, you have probably seen the story unfold on a screen, without panels, and you have seen the story in movies, which use many, many panels. That is exactly what a graphic novel is. You could see a graphic novel in the very first film noir, “The Maltese Falcon,” or “Double Indemnity.”

It was a few years ago, but “The Maltese Falcon” had several chapters. It was not an epic story, like in the comics, but it was clearly a novel. When the “Famous Monsters” show was on television, it was also like a graphic novel. There were dozens of pages, but they did not tell a single continuous story. The same was true of “Double Indemnity” in the novel, which was a more traditional style. I am not saying that all graphic novels should be long books with many panels. That would defeat the purpose, I think. However, there are a few important differences. In comic books, a page is made up of panels, while in a graphic novel a page is a single visual. The comic book style of the page with the panels is the way it was done when the comic book was invented in the 1930s. The idea was to break up the text into sections, in order to help readers comprehend the text faster, and make it easier for the reader to identify all the characters. The “Famous Monsters” and “Double Indemnity” are examples of works which combine all the elements of a novel (plot, characterization, dialogue, and description) in a single page. In a graphic novel, a story is told in a continuous fashion. In the same way that I see it in a novel, I see it in a graphic novel.

What do you see the use of graphic novels for students who are studying literature?

An easy, fun way to teach them what graphic novels are. For my students who are reading comic books, I ask them to give me a few of their favorite graphic novels, and I do them. I read them, and then we discuss them. But students who are reading graphic novels have the advantage of getting a book that is complete, and the only reason I read a graphic novel is to help my students understand graphic novels. To understand graphic novels you must read them in the same way that you read a novel. I believe in the use of graphic novels in the classroom as a way of helping students understand how to write graphic novels, as well as graphic novels.

What are some graphic novels students should be reading?

Graphic novels are often used as textbooks in a way that textbooks are not used in the way they were created. But there are always some works that stand out above the others. I would suggest you read the graphic novel version of “The Catcher in the Rye”. It was written in graphic novel form, and it is a great book. You can find out more about this book by doing a search on Amazon.

What other graphic novels can you recommend to your students?

Here is a list of graphic novels that you can easily find: “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger, “Pulp Fiction”, “Watchmen”, “Sin City”, “Persepolis”, “Asterios Polyp”, “Stardust”, “Fables”, “Bones”, “Asterix”, “Ghost World”, “Frank Miller’s Sin City”, and “Watchmen”.

Please leave your suggestions for what you think should be in this list in the comment section at the bottom of this page.

As you can see, graphic novels have become a part of the culture we live in. They are being read by people of all ages, and they are being used as textbooks in the classroom. We need to understand what is a graphic novel, and how graphic novels can be used in our classes.
