# **Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)**

# **For treating anxiety, PTSD, stress and depression in dogs and cats**

_"Cognitive behavior therapy was developed in the 1970s to help people who had anxiety disorders to learn new ways of thinking and behaving. It's been shown to be an effective treatment for many people who have anxiety disorders, but it has not been used widely in veterinary medicine because of the many variables involved. In order for CBT to be successful, the person must learn to change the way he or she thinks and behaves. This will affect how he or she feels about events. CBT is thought to affect a person by changing their thoughts and behaviors, which change the way the brn processes information. This is thought to help in reducing anxiety, depression and stress."_

A person who is undergoing CBT, or cognitive behavioral therapy, is asked to complete homework assignments. During the homework assignments, the person will learn to control their thoughts, feelings and behavior. The homework assignments can help the person understand how he or she is feeling and how to change the way they react to those feelings. CBT can be used with people who have anxiety, stress and depression or other related problems.

**What does CBT look like in a dog?**

"CBT is a learning process, which includes the following steps:

1. _Telling the story_ : A person is taught to change the way he or she thinks, feels and behaves.

2. _The homework_ : A person is taught to practice the changes that he or she is working on in everyday life.

3. _Results_ : The person learns how he or she has been able to control thoughts and feelings and what their reactions have been.

**Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for human beings**

The CBT that is used in treating human beings is thought to have originated from the work of psychologist Albert Ellis (1897–1985) in the 1960s. CBT is different from a person's current belief system, which Ellis called cognitive dissonance. This is the idea that people who hold a positive view of themselves or their actions will hold on to those views even in the face of evidence to the contrary. CBT teaches people to learn a different view of their situation, which will change the way they react.
